Blogging Ladies’ Dinner at Boccocino

While blogging events are great fun, I really enjoy catching up with blogging friends in quieter surroundings and with less of us. So when Andrea invited Angie, Catherine and I to Bocconcino in Mayfair for a weeknight treat I jumped at the chance!
These ladies are some of the closest friends I’ve made through my little blog and I always love hearing what they’re up to, from Catherine’s trip to Poland, Angie’s holiday of a life time in St Lucia and Andrea trying to get the work life balance that I’m going to be searching for next year there was a lot to catch up on!

We started with a round of drinks as we perused the menus and admired the beautiful decor in the restaurant.

We had a few dishes to share for our starters including King prawns and courgette tempura.

Crisp calamari with tartar sauce.

Delicious salty parma ham (a real favourite of mine) served with cheese pastries; a lovely dish, though I did feel that the pastry could have been a little thinner.

As well as the lovely caprese salad you saw at the top of this post.

There’s one thing about food bloggers: when they know they’re going to a restaurant, they pre-select their dishes. Aka when I say we’re looking at the menus, we’re really just bluffing as we already know what we’re going to order. Angie and Andrea had already eyed up the tuna tartar, and even though it wasn’t included on the set menu, they couldn’t resist ordering one to try.
I much prefer tartar when it’s in delicious chunks as against too finely diced as this was and I found the pepper in the dish to be more than a little overpowering, as did Catherine. But that’s the thing with food – Angie and Andrea really liked the kick that this dish had.

I adore neutral tones (I’m really excited about decorating my new flat with all the neutral, comforting tones!) and immediately fell in love with the decor as soon as I walked in the door. It’s a very luxurious setting, and a lovely place in Mayfair to visit for simple, modern Italian cuisine.

The restaurant itself is in the basement level, accessed by a very grand spiral staircase.

Catherine and I were feeling a little indulgent, and had already spied the lovely thin crust pizzas floating around the restaurant, and so couldn’t resist ordering a couple ourselves.

I thought the thin bases were delicious; really crisp and not doughy at all, though not quite as good as Pizza Pilgrims when it came to the actual base. There’s always going to be something comforting and delicious about pizza… And this hit the spot!

Andrea and Angie were being a little bit more virtuous at the other end of the table and ordered the sea bass with a potato crust. I didn’t try any of the dish, but they both said the fish was perfectly cooked, though it did need a fair amount of seasoning to really bring the flavours out.

They also had sides of steamed broccoli (virtuous, I really did mean it!)…

And just a few chips, which looks scrumptious!

Angie and I were both being good by this point (especially after I’d just had most of a pizza) and ordered desserts to taste but not really to eat.

Between the four of us we ordered two servings of the passion fruit cheesecake, which looked delicious, though could perhaps have done with a little more base for those who love the digestive crunch.

As well as two servings of the tiramisu, which I tried and thought was really lovely; a great dessert to finish a meal, and a classic Italian dish.

Bocconcino is a great addition to the Mayfair casual dining scene, and a good bolt hole if you’re looking for this type of cuisine in the area.
