Hakkasan Hanway with London Restaurant Festival

As part of London Restaurant Festival 2015, over 250 restaurants are offering special Festival Menus and well, it’s a temptation I couldn’t resist. Some of London’s best restaurants are taking part, and when I saw Hakkasan Hanway on the list I knew exactly where I wanted to take Andy and I for a very special date night.
Hakkasan Hanway

We arrived one very drizzly evening, about as excited as school children as we knew we were in for a culinary delight. Hakkasan Hanway is a Michelin Star restaurant that serves some of, if not the, best Chinese food and Dim Sum in London and is the original Hakkasan restaurant.

I know the umbrella doesn’t exactly make the outfit, but hey, it was really rather wet!
The restaurant itself is tucked away at the end of Hanway Place; in fact, it’s so tucked away that you’ve really got to look for it – I mean look how small the sign is!
Right from the start you know you’re in for understated elegance.

You wander down a few flights of stairs (ladies beware – pick your shoe attire appropriately!), and down into a beautiful reception area, where you’re checked in, your coats and umbrellas are taken, before being whisked to your seats.

The dining room has been designed by Christina Liaigre and reflects Chinese history, tradition and architecture.

Even though it’s quite dark, each table has its own individual lights, meaning that you’re able to appreciate your beautiful date, the food and well, if you’re a blogger – don’t worry you ain’t got no lighting issues here!

We were soon sipping on Voss sparkling water as we perused the menu and the extensive wine list.

Hakkasan Hanway

The incredible wine list here has over 400 different wines and the sommelier is very happy to help you choose exactly which bottle you want, dependent on your tastes, your preferences and your budget.

The Taste of Hakkasan menu starts with two small eats, one of which is a selection of steamed Dim Sum.

Hakkasan Hanway

Prawn Dim Sum, scallop and Caviar, vegetables and other seafood Dim Sum; frankly, it’s even better than it sounds.

The flavours are so clean and fresh and cooked in a way that you can taste each individual ingredient.

Hakkasan Hanway

I adored the scallop and caviar serving, not only as scallops are one of my favourite foods, but because you could tell that they were some of the freshest and best quality scallops available. It really was incredible; even better than Fu Manchu which I though was delicious.

The small eats were served with soy sauce and two types of chilli cause – depending on how good you are at taking the heat!

The other small eat was salt and pepper squid: a really simple dish that was executed perfectly. The batter was incredibly crisp and not greasy at all, and I loved the crispy topping, complete with spring onions.

For mains we opted for two of the three options to share, the first of which was the incredible grilled Chilean seabass in honey, served with battered mushrooms.

The fish was so perfectly cooked that it fell apart when we tried to pick it up with our chopsticks: we knew this was going to be an extraordinary dish. It was full of flavour and the honey added a delicious stickyness, which paired very well with the jasmine rice that was served with the dishes.

Hakkasan Hanway

I have to admit I wasn’t expecting much from the battered mushrooms, but boy was I wrong! In fact, they were so good that I got quite upset that Andy had the last one before I could get my paws on it!

Each of the dishes is served with jasmine rice and a seasonal vegetable, which in our case was asparagus.

In my opinion the stand out dish of the night was the Pipa duck: a truly exceptional dish that had the perfect balance between crispy skin, tender meat and just the right amount of hoisin sauce.

Hakkasan Hanway

Not just taste perfect, but picture perfect too!

Hakkasan Hanway

I think I could have lived on this dish; it truly was the best example of a duck dish I’ve ever had in London. I only wished there was a littttle more, as if we hadn’t been sharing dishes it would have been quite a small plate, which might have been fine for me but perhaps not for Andy.

In case you’re wondering if all this deliciousness couldn’t be continued into the third course, you would be wrong: the desserts were as outstanding as the rest of the meal.
We had the chocolate orange delice, with mandarin jelly, toasted hazelnut and chocolate mousse, which was as glorious as it sounds and looks!

Hakkasan Hanway

Each element of the dish was perfect, and in combination there are almost no words for it.

Hakkasan Hanway

Which, considering I’m a real chocoholic is saying something!

Hakkasan Hanway

I mean just look at it in all its glory!

Hakkasan Hanway

The second dessert we shared was delicious, but not quite as mind-blowing as the chocolate one that we had had previously.

It was an apple tatin with vanilla ice cream, calvados and caramel, with exceedingly finely chopped apples.

Hakkasan Hanway

It was a delicious dessert, but if I had to choose again I think I would choose the chocolate!

Hakkasan Hanway

Though it still couldn’t be faulted, I just think that whenever I’m presented with two delicious desserts and one of them is chocolate that that’s going to be the winner for me!

If I was to fault one aspect of our evening it would be the cocktails. Firstly, we had to ask for them only to initially be told that they had changed the menu last week and changed the cocktails for the dessert and I had to dig up the confirmation email that I had been sent to show our waiter.
I also checked the Bookatable website again, and if there has been a change, it hasn’t been reflected on the site as yet.
Having said that, once I had shown the waiter the confirmation he was more than happy to bring us our cocktails and offered his apologies.

Hakkasan Hanway
Sadly, the cocktail wasn’t as much of a knock out as the rest of the meal had been, but it didn’t put us off Hakkasa an

I mean just look at that happy foodie!

After a wonderfully luxurious date night we wandered back into the rain and headed home after one of the best dinners we’ve had in a long time. Hakkasan, you very much lived up to expectations – and I just know I’ll be back!
