Simple Pleasures at MI + ME, St Pancras

Last Thursday, mum and I checked into the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel as we were traveling to Paris the next morning to celebrate her birthday, and after checking in, settling into our gorgeous room and exploring a little, we realised we were ravenous and very much looking forward to a good meal!
For me, when it comes to traveling, I really want comfort food: simple food done really well, which is exactly what MI + ME, or Milk and Meat, does.
MI + ME St Pancras

The restaurant is based entirely around the best British meats and cheeses that MI + ME can find. Not only does it gleam its name from this, but also in homage to the milk and meat carriages, developed in Victorian times, that took fresh produce all around the country.

A pretty perfect name for a station restaurant if you ask me!

Located in the upper concourse of the station, where you can sit and watch the Eurostar trains arrive and depart throughout the day, and within reaching distance of the Booking Office bar and the hotel itself, mum and I only had to leave our room a couple of minutes before our reservation to make it to the restaurant on time!

Though we were a little worried it would be chilly as it’s essentially outside, we didn’t need to worry as on a chilly autumnal evening the heated lamps were on, and there were even lovely, warm blankets for us to wrap up in.

As you might imagine, the menu itself is fairly simple and is based around, well, meat and cheese! The main options being either burgers or meat and cheese boards, with sides including mac and cheese and salads.

As we admired the setting and talked about what a beautiful hotel we were staying in (full post coming soon!), we ummed and ahhhed about what we would like to eat.

Well, mum did. ‘Cause as much as I love luxurious dining, Japanese restaurants and tasting menus, I can’t resist a good burger when it comes to comfort food.

We ordered a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc to accompany our meal, which was served perfectly crisp and cold. Though I have to say, we both would have preferred actual wine glasses as against the water tumblers that were served.

As we waited for our meal I cosied up in my blanket; there’s something wonderful about autumn evenings – just the right temperature to still sit outside (under a heater!) but cold enough to get nice and cosy.

Before long our food arrived on trays, again in keeping with the theme. I have to say it smelt so good that it was difficult to make sure I had photos before I dived in!

The burger was wonderful: high quality meat, cooked exactly as I had requested it, and topped with delicious British cheddar, served in a light and fluffy bun with garlic aioli, tomato, onion and salad.

It was exactly as it should have been: fantastic ingredients, well cooked to make the perfect comfort food for two travelers!

I mean just look at this! Pink and tender meat with oooooooozing cheese…

The burgers are served with chips, which are piping hot, crisp on the outside and utterly moreish. Seriously. Moreish.

Mum opted for a lighter option of a meat and cheese board and chose two cheeses and two meats: the Suffolk rosemary salami and Suffolk chorizo for meats and the Winterdale, a hard Kentish cheese, and the Yorkshire Blue Monday for her cheeses.

Mum promptly declared that the meats and cheeses were all delicious, and that she was amazed that such beautiful meats could  have been made in our own back garden! Topped with chutneys, bread and walnuts, mum happily cleared her plate, happy and full of her comfort food!

Now, if there’s one food that positively screams comfort food to me it’s mac and cheese and since we were indulging in comfort food we couldn’t resist ordering a side of mac and cheese and I am so glad that we did!

Topped with a crunchy gratin, and oozing cheese as you cracked the surface this was one hell of a side!

Honestly, a real must order and a truly fabulous side. It was a rather indulgent meal I have to admit…

Even the sauces were served rustic style to match the decor and the vibe of the restaurant. Everything really has been taken care of here.

Not quite ready to say goodbye to this spot, I ordered a cappucino, decaf to make sure that I slept, and mum had a chamomile tea.
