Weekends are made for long brunches, which roll late into the afternoon and are filled with amazing food, bubbles and even better company. With Becca in town for the weekend brunch was the order of the day, and I couldn’t think of anywhere better than Eneko at One Aldwych!
Not only is One Aldwych a date night favourite with their Film & Fizz offering, but I was really excited to finally visit Eneko at One Aldwych. Named after the head chef, Eneko Atxa, a chef famed for his 3 Michelin Star Azurmendi restaurant which is one of the World’s Top 50 Restaurants, Eneko serves fine Basque cuisine with a modern touch.
Becca spent part of her year abroad at university in Spain, so I was really excited to share a Spanish brunch with someone who appreciates Spanish food as much as I do!
We started our brunch with a Etxano 75 cocktail, made with gin mare and lemon juice and topped with cava, and toasted to our reunion! At the Eneko brunch you can opt for the tasting menu which allows you to taste some of the highlights of the menu, but we opted to share a few starters and a couple of main courses between us.
And there wasn’t a dish which didn’t blow us away. Mussels served in a tomato sauce were perfectly cooked and had just the right kick – and were served with enough sauce which we happily mopped up with fresh, warm bread.
I love sharing style food, and dipping in and out of different plates, but if you prefer not to share, you would be more than happy with a starter per person. But trust me, you may just need to try all of these dishes…
Our second starter was from the street food section of the menu and was certainly the most beautifully plated dish of our meal. The Traditional Talo, a crispy corn talo with the freshest heirloom tomatoes, avocado purée, plenty of basil and pansies, it really is a must order dish. All the flavours are so light and refreshing that it was almost like a delicious palette cleanser in between mouthfuls of our other starters.
The last dish we started with was one which had immediately caught Becca’s eye, and we couldn’t leave without ordering it.
Two perfect suckling pig brioche buns are served on a stunning wooden board – and I’ll bet that they don’t last long on your plate! The slightly sweet brioche was light, crisp on the outside and made the perfect shell for the tender pork shoulder in the centre.
I couldn’t quite believe how tender the meat was and just how moreish it was! If you’re ordering these, and I can’t recommend enough that you do, you might want to order a second starter too if you’re hungry as they are quite small.
As I head all about what was going on in Jersey (and mentally planned my next visit!) we popped a bottle of cava to continue our celebrations. What’s a catch up without something bubbly..!
I loved that it’s not just the food at the Eneko brunch which is Basque; much of the furniture and details have been sourced from craftsmen in the Basque region, adding a real touch of the area to Covent Garden!
The restaurant itself is stunning, and has a staircase which I loved!
After discussing my upcoming Mexico and Budapest trips, laughing at what we’ve both been up to and well, everything under the sun(!) our beautiful main courses arrived.
For Becca, it was thinly sliced duck breast served with green Gernika peppers and served with a little coarse salt on top. Served perfectly pink, it was a wonderful main course. I’m a huge fan of duck so couldn’t resist trying just a little… And I very almost had food envy!
I loved the sound of the monkfish, served with garlic, chilli and parsley and was really pleased with my choice. Tender, flavoursome fish with just enough chilli and no more, I could eat this dish again and again.
All the grill dishes are served with thinly cut fried potatoes which are entirely moreish..!
Somehow… Just somehow… We had saved enough room for dessert and decided to split the salted caramel mousse served with cookie crumble and sheep’s milk ice cream.
I love returning to One Aldwych – it’s also a great spot for drinks in their beautiful lobby – and now have another reason to do so! Next time I’d love to go back for a date night dinner with Andy, or take mum for lunch after shopping in Covent Garden. With a location that’s perfect and food which is delicious and different, it’s somewhere I can see myself returning to again and again.
