The return of the dinner party

The modern dinner party is less about performance than a table that lets people stay a little longer.

The dinner party has returned in a quieter form. It is less theatrical than its old reputation and more generous: a table with enough chairs, food that can tolerate conversation, and lighting that forgives a mismatched glass.

The new rule

Do not cook anything that needs your full attention after guests arrive. A dinner party is not a restaurant shift. It is a shared evening, and the host should be at the table.

Build the menu backwards

Start with what can be prepared early. Add one warm dish, one bright salad, bread, and a dessert that waits. A roast chicken, a tray of vegetables, pasta finished at the last minute, or a pot of beans can all be enough.

The table

Use cloth napkins if you have them. Mix plates if needed. Put water on the table before anyone asks. Flowers are lovely, but candles do more work after dark.

Host notes

  • Invite the number of people your table can hold comfortably.
  • Make one dish less complicated than you think necessary.
  • Set the table before cooking becomes urgent.
  • Keep music low enough for conversation.
  • Let the evening end naturally.

What matters most

A good dinner party gives people a reason to put their phones away without being told. That is the real luxury.
