Tart-ed Up Brunch in Clapham

January 26, 2016

I mean, is it even the weekend if you didn’t have brunch? Didn’t think so. This weekend David and I set out for a flat brunch in our new area of Clapham, determined to find a little gem of a brunch spot. When we locked our eyes on the very cute and very Instagram worthy Tart, we dived in hoping we’d found our new weekend local.

A fairly new café as it’s still in its first year, Tart is a welcome addition to The Pavement, home to some of Clapham Old Town’s best restaurants and shops. Having discovered that Tart were runners up in the Time Out Love London Awards last year we knew we were in for a bit of a treat.
Brunch being a great Antipodean feast and having read on their menu that their coffee is roasted by London based New Zealanders, we excitedly ordered a flat white and a cappucino.

Truly delicious coffee, perfectly roasted and strong as it comes; the perfect Saturday morning pick me up.

David, being the ever healthy gent that he is, ordered the smashed avocado with lime chilli on sourdough, with a generous side of parma ham and a perfectly poached egg. A very fresh, healthy and flavoursome dish that he really enjoyed. A classic brunch dish that really hit the spot.

And, well, just look at how perfect that eggy ooze is…

What I really enjoyed at Tart is that even though they serve classic brunch dishes, they’re served with a twist. I ordered the Tart Benedict, which instead of the usual muffin is served in a puff pastry sandwich. The crisp, flaky pastry made a perfect contrast to the soft egg and salty parma ham.

Not quite ready to leave (and not even remotely caught up with each others news) we perused the incredible cakes that Tart serve. After what can only be descried as a very difficult decision we chose the raspberry and chocolate brownie.
All I can say was excellent choice. This was the brownie of dreams: gooey, soft and entirely moreish, it was everything we were hoping for. Word of warning though, you can easily share one between two, especially after brunch, as they’re  quite heavy and rich.

In case you’re more of a coffee and cake kind of person, Tart serve an incredible selection of cakes and pastries. Ranging from croissants…

To banana loaf with pecan icing, coffee and walnut cake…

Carrot cake with coconut frosting…

Chocolate chip cookies and loads more! They’re freshly made so I imagine the selection changes regularly, which is good if you plan on being a regular customer!

With lots of their menu items being gluten free it’s a fabulous spot for a weekend brunch or a quick coffee and a cake with friends.

The only downside? The service was quite slow and the server had forgotten about our coffees. Though I have to say, the staff are very friendly and it wouldn’t stop me going back; I just wouldn’t brunch here if I was in a rush.

But then, who really wants a quick brunch anyway?

A real gem for a Tart-ed up brunch if you ask me. Oh, and I can’t wait to try their hampers for a picnic on Clapham Common when the weather gets a little warmer!
