Sometime at the end of June, when all the exams are over, and the sun is (hopefully!) shining, I’m off to Amsterdam for a long weekend. Hurrah, a long overdue weekend of bliss, no stress about anything remotely academic, because I’ll be officially on my six months off before I start work, and generally enjoying myself in a new city.

But there’s just one more thing that I need… Your tips! As a bit of a blog addict I love reading about everyone’s adventures, so if you’ve got any tips on Amsterdam I’d love to hear them.
I know that one day I’ll be working with Amsterdam Unguided on their new product: a self-guided tour of Amsterdam (have a little look at them if you haven’t heard of them already), but apart from that my weekend is totally unplanned. I know it’s very unlike me: my travels are usually planned to a tee months in advance, but I blame it on this mini break being rather spontaneous and exams taking up far too much space in my brain. I don’t even have a hotel booked!
So… I need… a hotel, some restaurant recommendations and your top tourist tips for the city.
I can’t wait to go!
Have you been to Amsterdam before? Have you written a post on the city? Leave me your links and tips in the comments – I’d really love to hear from you!

  • Ah I LOVED Amsterdam, by far one of my favourite places. Make sure you go on a canal boat tour, there's beer on board so what's not to like!? We didn't have very good experiences with food there so I can't recommend where to eat, but I can recommend where NOT to eat (!!) – anywhere with a picture of the food outside! AVOID AVOID AVOID!

Have an amazing time, I'm so very jealous!

  • Haha, I will be sneaking the comment section then because I'm going to be in Amsterdam at the end of June, as well!!
It'll be my first time and I need some recommendations. 🙂 The only thing I can suggest is that you have a look at because it often is cheaper than staying in a hotel.

  • I haven't been for year (11 to be precise) I know Kiwi Emma has been recently and Jaime xx

  • You have a ridiculous memory, lady! My father-in-law's partner is Dutch and they have an apartment there, so John and I stay there when we visit.

Lauren, we love the Jordaan – there are lots of boutiques and delicious little restaurants. One of our favorites is Fraiche, which does a fantastic brunch AND dinner. I recommended it to a friend who was visiting Amsterdam recently and she really liked it too! I also blogged about our trip here, if you'd like to read more:

I loved Amsterdam! I had an amazing burger at "Burger Bar" and if you like cats then you NEED to visit Katten Kabinet!

We too are off to Amsterdam in the summer – don't miss the Tunes Bar at the Conservatorium Hotel, their G&T's are legendary (and huge!) Also if you are in need of a quick fast-food snack grab a Febo Burger on the go, literally like a burger vending machine on the side of the street – dangerously good.

  • Thank you so much! Love all these tips!

  • I can't wait! Haha yes, tourist trap = avoid! XX
