Café Babylone, Rennes

This has to be one of the best restaurants in Rennes, and I’ve made my way round a hell of a lot of them! Café Babylone has some of the best food, wine and definitely the best service we experienced in Rennes.
The problem was, every time we went, I either forgot my camera, or didn’t feel as though my photos did the restaurant or the food, justice.
But, last weekend, when we were moving out of Rennes, I finally managed to take the right photos, and I’m delighted to share one of my favourite restaurants with you!
We started our evening as all good French summer evenings do, with an apéro (or two) outside – and a lot of laughs! The three of us, (my flatmate, my dad and myself) all sat down at one of the coolest bars we found in Rennes and nibbled our way through crisps and drank our wine over some hysterical year abroad stories and stories from my Dad’s days of travelling.

^ Please excuse my eyes, I have really bad hayfever at the moment, though the local honey in my morning smoothie is working a treat!

Johan, the friendliest waiter in the world, always has the most incredible wine recommendations – and even managed to impress Dad which is a compliment of the highest order! He also loves practicing his English which, frankly, was a saving grace on more than one occasion.

He recommended a beautiful buttery but crisp wine, which slid down all too easily!

Dad couldn’t resist grabbing the camera and making the most of the evening light to take photos of some of the gorgeous buildings that surround the restaurant. The restaurant is right at the back of the cathedral, and so is lucky enough to be in one of the most beautiful areas of Rennes.

The upstairs, where we were sitting, is almost always empty (I never understand why!) which means we get the pick of the best tables, can turn the music up and down as we please and generally, make ourselves comfortable.

The quirky decor is also great fun: there are frames of wine corks, and one wall is paneled with wine box sides – very cool!

And all too soon it was feast time! I’ve lost count of how many times we ended up visiting Babylone, but what I can tell you is that this is the starter I had every time but one. It is so good. Salmon addicts take note: if you’re ever in Rennes, this dish is a must!

It’s served with stunning sun roasted tomatoes, chives and a little garlic – and it’s some of the best smoked salmon I’ve ever had. Deeelicious.

And French bread, well, what can I say? I’m really going to miss it!

The main course was a twist on an old favourite of ours (okay, yes we go there and have the same thing every time – but that’s just how good it is!); Dad and I opting for the slow roasted pork served with vegetable dauphinoise and mash with pesto. OH yeah. That happened. I can’t tell you how good the food it, and how high the quality is.

The pork falls apart and is some of the most succulent and taste-full meat that I’ve ever had.

When it comes to the vegetable dauphinoise, well it was divine! I think I’ll try my hand at making it soon.

Mihiqua, a true English gal at heart opted for the roast beef which was divine – I almost had food envy. It looked like the most beautiful rare roast beef I’ve seen in a long time – the perfect meal to transition back to living in England I think.

Thoroughly stuffed, but still unable to say no to a little pudding – we ordered the strawberry tart to share between the three of us.

Oh. My. God. The French know how to do a good dessert, and this was no exception. The base was crisp without being heavy, the crème patissiere was divine and the strawberries were so fresh.

Perfection.

This is how all good meals should end: with a clean plate!

I’ll miss this place I have to admit!
