There’s somewhere I’ve wanted to take Andy for the past 5 years. We both love staying in places that are different, a little quirky and that have their very own story. So if you ask us, there are few hotels in the UK that have a better story than being a former prison! Having decided to extend our Easter holidays by a day, I jumped on the chance for us to finally book a night at Malmaison Oxford!
As soon as you arrive at Malmaison Oxford (a very convenient 10 minute walk or 2 minute taxi from the station) you can feel the history of the building. Not only is it a former prison, but it’s actually located in the castle, so you if it’s a hotel with a story you’re after, you might struggle to find somewhere better!
As we were celebrating, I had booked us into a Junior Suite for the night. The room itself is a half moon shape with gorgeous exposed brick walls, which reminded of the minimalist luxury we had booked for the evening.
The main feature of the room is the king-sized bed – a bed which has all the pillows and cushions, which is something I absolutely love!
I have to admit, I’ve stayed at Malmaison Oxford before – quite a few years ago when I was applying to study at Oxford University. That time, we stayed in the House of Corrections, a smaller wing of the hotel which is across the old exercise yard from the main building.
The hotel has been redecorated since then, with a new grey colour scheme, bright accents and modern art adorning the rooms.
But as spacious as the bedroom was, there was something incredibly special about the bathroom!
A roll top bath is ready and waiting to greet you, complete with a mirror which doubles as a book stand if you want to read in the bath! The ultimate spot for a little pre-dinner relaxation.
It’s not just a suite that pleases if you’re more of a bath kind of person. With two monsoon showers in this wet room, there’s time for you both to get ready – no matter how late you’ve left it (or how long you’ve spent in the bath!)
If you could just pop a copy of CN Traveller or Vogue or Tatler or Porter there… That would be ideal…
Since we were on holiday, and actually celebrating a special anniversary, we popped open a bottle of my favourite champagne, Laurent-Perrier to toast the occasion! I slipped into the bath squealing with happiness and had a long soak..
I think it’s safe to say that Malmaison Oxford has changed a little since the days where you didn’t have to pay for a stay… These 95 rooms and suites should certainly be on your most wanted list!
With a bar, brasserie and room service you never have to leave your cell if you don’t want to!
Pop open your mini bar and you’ll find everything you’d expect to keep you going, plus some tea for the morning, too!
Or in my case, a cup of Nespresso coffee to chase away sleepy eyes!
We were in C wing for the night, but if you want a true cell experience, book yourself a Superior Cell Double in A wing. The rooms look a little cosier, but if it’s a cell experience with a proper cell door, then these are the rooms for you.
Complete with original stair cases, you’d be forgiven for thinking you couldn’t leave in the morning!
I think you could lock me in here for more than a night to be honest…
Cheers to a perfect night away!
