After our amazing first day in Papaya Playa Project, we woke up, had our beach side breakfast and decided to spend the day just enjoying the beach. With an entire two week holiday ahead of us, we were more than happy to kick back, relax and enjoy a hotel that we had both been looking forward to spending time in.
Being up ever so slightly early ’cause of some pesky jet lag, we certainly had our pick of sun beds and the kind staff were happy to give us our towels and allow us to find the perfect bed for the day. Aka, in the sun enough for me to feel happy and warm, but not too sunny that our English/Scottish skin was going to burn too quickly!
I popped into the bar area to ask for some smoothies to take down to the beach and was again hit by that feeling that only gets you when you’re in a place that you’ve wanted to visit for so long. And you’re finally there. I adored the rustic, beach chic luxury of this hotel, and could easily have spent days, and weeks with our feet in the white sand, in my bikini, listening to the waves, the music and drinking cocktails all day long.
With smoothies in hand, I hopped back down the steps and onto the white sandy beach. For anyone who hasn’t stalked Tulum on Pinterest as I have for the past few years, the beaches are well known for being as pristine as you can imagine with stunning, natural hotels all along the beach front.
We found a beach bed for the day, which had just enough palm leaves to keep us shady during the peak sunny hours, lay down our towels and just enjoyed the heat and the magic of the place. The whole time we were at Papaya Playa Project I was thinking of the words to describe it, and as simple as it sounds, the only way to describe it is special.
I mean just look at those beaches. Just look at the natural beauty of this place, and imagine service with a smile on top, and our lovely casita to head back to at night. We didn’t want for anything when we stayed and even if we had, someone would have found it for us.
The whole hotel has this vibe of laid back luxury, of beach chic and of doing things in your own time. When you walk from your jungle casita to the beach you walk through the restaurant, beach club and bar, with staff saying ‘hola’, offering to help, and of course, you get to look at those beautiful locally designed buildings that I completely fell for in Tulum. Papaya Playa Project call this one the ‘woodscraper’ – and I can’t help that a little bit of me wishes some of the skyscrapers at home looked more like this! (and that we had the weather for it…!)
Neither of us can sit still for particularly long very well, and so after a couple of hours of reading, relaxing and enjoying the beach, we headed out for a wander around the hotel.
After stopping for some respite at the bar though…
Instead of the Papaya Playa Project tuk tuk, we decided to explore the hotel by foot.
And not too far along the way we were rewarded with a beautiful plunge pool, hidden behind the palm trees but still with that view of the beach…
With a shady hammock spot right beside for when it all gets too hot… It’s somewhere you could sit for a long while!
Hop along the wooden paths, enjoy the views and you’ll find a few more little pools ready and waiting for you. They’re not huge, but no matter when we went, there was no one else there and we could dip our toes in the water, sit and read for a a while and being entirely undisturbed.
And all the while, you’re right next to the beach and can get sandy toes and salty hair whenever you want…
But don’t go getting the idea that Papaya Playa Project is a sleepy little haven. PPP is well known for its late night Beach Club nights, where music lovers come to dance the night away. And if you happen to be there on a full moon night, then PPP will certainly have the party for you!
But with it still being a sleepy Monday morning, we headed back to our beach bed for the afternoon where I let myself doze in and out of sleep, reading my book, playing cards with Andy and sipping on delicious tequila cocktails.
You really can’t have better Monday blues than that.
With rumbles from our tummies, we felt it was probably about time for a light lunch… And not being ones to go far from a beach, we headed back to the beachside restaurant for some nibbles.
Fish tacos and prawn tacos, topped with the freshest salsa you can imagine was just what we wanted. Delicious, fresh fish with a slightly spicy salsa; lunch time perfection.
If anyone would like to pass me a plate now… I’m sure I’d manage some more…!
When the sun was a little less hot, it’s time to stroll on the beach… Until we found the swings which I never wanted to leave… And may or may not have insisted on coming back for a little swing every day..!
Somehow I think I could have stayed for days… Tulum, you really are something else.
But as the afternoon started to turn to evening, we headed back to our room before getting ready for a very special dinner.
