Just outside Newquay, the little town of Mawgan Porth can be the perfect place for a weekend break to remember. Having spent a magical weekend there in November, I want to help you organise the perfect British weekend away with these 10 top tips!
- Stay at The Scarlet for a romantic retreat
Our stay at The Scarlet was one of the most memorable that we’ve had in a long time. I loved the attention to detail and the fact that the staff were so dedicated to making you feel so special.
2. Book yourself a hot tub with a view
There aren’t many words which can describe just how magical sitting in these hot tubs are. Say cheers with a glass of champagne brought to you in your tub, enjoy the perfect temperature and watch the sunset over the beach. It doesn’t get much better than that if you ask me!
3. Take a long walk on the beach
It’s not really Cornwall if you don’t spend at least a few hours walking along the beach, with the water lapping at your feet, enjoying the feel of feet or boots in the sand. Watch the dogs run back and forth and remind yourself just how beautiful the British seaside really is.
4. Book a table at the best restaurant in town
I mentioned in my post about our lunch at Fifteen Cornwall that it was one of the highlights of the trip, and so it definitely deserves a place in any top ten about Mawgan Porth. Okay, it’s in Newquay and not Mawgan Porth itself – but it really is worth the 15 minute drive!
5. Experience the Sensory Spa Garden at The Bedruthan
The Sensory Spa Garden is one of the most fun spa experiences I’ve had recently, and it was so great to see groups of friends enjoying it as well as couples. Leave with your skin glowing and all signs of stress alleviated, oh, and a great big smile on your face. What more could you want?
6. And… Relax
When you’re staying at The Scarlet, check in to the spa for a massage, before retreating to the beautiful sauna in the grounds to enjoy that view a little more through the port hole! Not a massage fan? Allow yourself to switch off in the light relaxation room before using the Cornish salt room and swimming laps or floating in the beautiful swimming pool.
7. Enjoy delicious food from the comfort of your hotel
Whether you’re staying at The Scarlet or The Bedruthan Hotel, the kitchen certainly has you sorted when it comes to a wonderful date night dinner. With both restaurants making the most of local produce, you’re guaranteed to have a great night with some of the best food around. Oh, and never forget the cheese course – with local Cornish cheeses being showcased it would be a real mistake to miss that one!
8. Sit by the fire and read a book… Or play cards
After a long walk, it’s wonderful to sit beside a warm fire with a glass of champagne or a gin and tonic and read the book that you’ve not had time to catch up on for a long time. Or (my favourite), pack a set of cards and sit and play games like 500 or cribbage. We spent a few hours before dinner on our first night playing cribbage, as we had done at Wriggly Tins; it’s amazing what playing games can do to relax you.
9. Enjoy cocktail hour before dinner
Though we love going out for dinner in London, it’s rare that we have pre-dinner cocktails at a different bar and then sit down for a great dinner. But when we were in Mawgan Porth we made sure we sat at the bar, indulged in a delicious cocktail or glass of champagne before sitting down at the restaurant.
10. Enjoy a healthy or indulgent breakfast in bed
‘Cause after all, you’re on holiday and deserve the maximum relaxation possible!
